Event #2

Here's a dance class that I took photos of last night. I am very indecisive as to which one would be a good one.

I like the fun smiles of these people.
This one is just funny because it looks like he is scared to get hit by her.
This has good motion.....i guess....
I like this because they are really having fun and made a few bobbles in the steps but i don't like the arm coming out of her shoulder.

These two show the instructor calling out the steps as he teaches/dancing.

What do you think? Does it even qualify as an event photo???

More shots from the Robin Trower concert

I'm on a pretty solid wifi connection so I'm going to post a few more shots from the show the other night. I'm going to try and shoot an event or two here in NY tonight or tomorrow as well.

This one's of the actual headliner — Robin Trower. I have several shots very similar to this one, but I like this one because the amps are in it. Unfortunately the sillhouettes of the people are too blurred/abstract to tell what they are.

Wednesday Assignment- Guidance Please

I am having a lot of problems getting the "right shot." If I concentrate on the audience, the reactions seem somewhat sedate. (Maybe our water supply has excessive levels of lithium)
If I concentrate on the actual event participants, I may capture emotion, but I end-up cropping limbs hands or freezing odd moments.

On Saturday I covered 2 events. The all Star game at NIC, and a Belly Dance Show at a Chinese restaurant in Spokane. The second event was my favorite, however, the lighting was a challenge for me and trying to find different angles that included the audience very difficult--Belly dancers like to move around specially in a very small stage. I am not much of a basketball fan, but I LOVE BELLY DANCERS!!!

The first one is of a Northern team fan checking her phone while she was creating a "I love Northern Idahoans." The South Team practices in the background.

The second shot is of a 4 year old that was rooting for her aunt, except her number is upside down and her aunts number was #5.

This shot I like, but having a overly stimulated fan projecting out of a players pelvis is somewhat odd.

Tribal Fusion Belly Dancer

KEEPER.

A dancer from Portland Oregon by the stage name on Shining performs a folkloric Egyptian Baladi inspired belly dance number on Saturday Mach 12 at a Chinese restaurant Located in Hillyard, WA. This community event showcases dancers of all levels and is organized by members of the belly dance troupe known as Baharat. Namva an active member of Baharat owns the Chinese Restaurant.

Event #1

These are probably my best shots from the game on Sat. I had some other good ones but they were FUZZY!!! ahhh.....

Probably my favorite just because it has the audience in it and has some action and emotion on the players faces.

Not sure about this one...what do you think?

I like this one because I have some reaction in the background with that guy watching the game and it shows the focus on the coaches and the players faces.

Event Assignment: Kootenai Humane Society Adoption

Here are a few of my favorite shots from the take. (Finally they are not underexposed! :) ) Let me know what you guys think!
I particularly like the one with the baby and also the last shot...

Event - Attempt #6, All Star Basketball at NIC

Heidi, Marily and I will probably all have keepers from this event.  At least this set finally got me something.  I am not sure which will be my final keeper but I noted the one that I currently like the best below.

Special thanks to Shawn Gust shooting the event for the CDA Press.  He gave us some great tips that radically changed the outcome of this shoot for me.  Also thanks to freelancer Jason Duchow who gave my some great ideas before the event started.  All of the photographers at the event were eager to help and I talked with quite a few of them.  I looked for people with white lenses, introduced myself and started asking questions.

I really like the facial expression of the girl holding the
ball and the hair and arms of the girl behind her.
I just wish I had not chopped off the legs and feet.

This is probably my keeper and is as close to showing
what I understand to be what Jerome is looking for.
I also like the triangle shape created by the players.
But I wish I had zoomed out just a touch more.
I'm glad I got names, interesting details and a quote
from each of the 57 people in this shot!!!

If there was a ball in this photo, I would seriously
have thought of making this my keeper.  The ref
in her armpit is a shame.  Darn ref!

Event - Attempt#5, St. Patrick's Day Parade

These were my keepers from the parade.  The crowd was once again very dissapointing.  I do not think I am going to pull off that awesome crowd participation shot for this assignment.  This event actually happened after the All Star Basketball game.  It just had not finished downloading when I got this one posted.

Event shots from the Robin Trower concert

Having a hard time editing through these so I'll just post up a few and see what you guys think. Some of these I changed to B&W even though I know we're not supposed to do that for this blog but I edited these to send to the bands to possibly purchase, hence the watermark. When I decide on a final image for the assignment I'll post it straight out of the camera. I only got to shoot from the pit for the first two songs.

This one's actually of the singer/guitarist for the opening group. He was pretty animated.

This is one that might work OK for a crowd shot. People were pretty calm at this show.

Well, I have others to put up but I'll add them later I have to run. I'm in NY and the wireless I'm trying to use right now is horrible.

Frustrated Attempt

Does a coach qualify as an audience?

My attempt at freezing both girls

There was not much action, so this was my attempt at finding the oddity

In my search for color I found these shoes....I want these shoes!

Event - Attempt#4, Buddhist Nuns in Todd Hall

No Kung Fu with these Buddhist Nuns from Spokane talking about meditation and finding happiness through selflessness and loosing the ego.  No action or active crowd participation either.  Fortunately, I was able to achieve emptiness and acceptance... and tomorrow is another day with two more events that are hopefully much more lively.  More practice never hurt a guy like me though.

Mike Memorial 10-20mm Lens Photo.  Mike, feel free to
download and look at the focal length because I cannot
remember what it is.  I'll bet it is between 17-20mm.

I just could not get a high or low enough angle to get
the wood away from her head in the background.

Event - Attempt#3, CHS Blue and White Track Event

Once again, no audience participation.  The audience consisted of other track and field participants who where just not going to give us anything interesting to look at.  But it is good practice.  Nothing great here, sorry.  But at least I finally got some motion into my photos here and there in an attempt to keep Mike happy.  I really feel like I am just no good at this stuff this week.  This makes three strikeouts in a row.

I really thought I had some great shots of
these pole vaulters but, no, I did not.

This is my favorite photo of the set.
I wish I would have exposed a touch longer.

For this shot I needed to get even lower to get the to standing
guy's heads over the blue roof line and I needed to get closer
to crop the scene down and get rid of the person to the far right.

A touch less motion blur would have been my preference of this photo.

I've got my eye on that F+ range for this assignment... I'll at least get my 10 percent for effort if all else fails, which is currently how it is looking... woohoo!!!

Chip Litherland Is Cool

I think Chip and I have worked out a plan for him to talk to our class this week. So I figured we better get cracking on getting to know what Chip shoots, how he shoots it and start working up some questions that we want to ask.

This is something you guys need to take advantage of because you can listen to me for hours at a time, but this is someone new. Someone who may have shot something or done something you want to know more about.

So let's start getting some questions together for Chip. In the meantime, here are some links to provide some more insight.

Event - Attempt #2, ALS Association

Nothing exciting here, as Jerome predicted, but I got roped into shooting it so I am gonna post a couple of photos.  Don't worry... I'm not planning on turning any of these in for our assignment. They are just more practice. Don't feel obligated to comment either.
